When a child learns to read they start by recognising the letters and then they build sounds and words with these. From this point they then learn to read the sentences by moving their eyes across the page from left to right. If you want to speed read you need to break this tradition and learn a new way of reading.

To successfully learn to speed read you should be able to grab a whole line and process it at once. This sounds difficult, but with practice it can become second nature. If you are driving behind a lorry and you see the words 'long vehicle' on the back of it, you don't in fact read them you recognise them. That is a very basic form of what you're about to learn to do.

There are several techniques which you need to master. Firstly you'll have to find some text to exercise with. Before you do anything else you will need a pencil, ruler and white piece of paper.

Now draw a line down the middle of the text in pencil. This is the line our eye must follow down the page. As you're teaching your brain to absorb the text as lines not words, you wish to be able to focus the mind on one line at a time.

Place your blank piece of paper over the text so that only the top line is showing. Now focus on the pencil line you have drawn. If you are lucky you may have read one word, the word which your line goes through. Imagine that you've simply absorbed the whole of the understanding of that line of text. Incredible is not it. This is how many people now read.

There are many courses available on how to speed read, many are great, but the rest may teach you nothing. The best courses will be ones that will go through the ways with you. When you learn to speed read the course is often as good as the people attending. If the course is targeted at people who are driven and keen to learn then the lecturer will be keen to teach them. If it is an introductory course you may find that at the finishing your knowledge of the skills is barely improved at all.

A beneficial method to select the best course to learn to speed read is to look at who the marketing is targeting. It is also a good idea to choose a course which offers some pre course preparation. This may only be reading some background on the lecturers or even doing some tests to set up your current reading speed. The crucial thing is that many people are put off by having to work, so if the course needs work up front it will be a way to discard those who are not truly interested in learning.

Remember that to successfully learn to speed read you will need to practice everyday.
